We put the vertical lift in the F-35B Lightning II. Our LiftSystem® is the only vertical lift technology for fighter jets in production in the world.

The unrivalled performance of the LiftSystem comes in part from the latest in digital control and fan system technology to deliver responsive, precise and powerful short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) capability with minimal impact on total airframe weight.

A PBL contracting structure incentivises contractors to focus on outcomes such as propulsion system availability, leading to greater efficiencies, mutual cost reductions, and operator benefits.

The companies formalised the new working relationship by signing a Memorandum of Understanding, agreeing to increase levels of cooperation and improve synergy as they join forces in support of the customer.

The agreement defines how the companies will collaborate and grow their sustainment capabilities. Pratt & Whitney, lead propulsion integrator for the F-35 program, will focus primarily on system-level performance of its F135 engines. We will lead on support for the LiftSystem technology the company developed and produced, while also undertaking some delegated support work on the main F135 engine. The two companies will also look to duplicate this support model for other F-35B customers.

We have signed a production contract totalling $216 million for the innovative LiftSystemsTM that provide powered lift capability to the F-35B Lightning II aircraft.

The agreement with F-35 propulsion integrator Pratt & Whitney will include 13 LiftSystems, plus additional program labour, spares and tooling. The agreement covers the next batch of Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP 9). An additional contract for LRIP 10 is expected later in the summer, and will cover deliveries through 2018. Rolls-Royce’s investment in production improvement has lowered the cost for the LiftSystem.

We have opened its new advanced LiftWorks repair facility for fighter jet propulsion components in Plainfield, IN, near the company’s existing Indianapolis facilities.

We will repair and overhaul components for the Roll-Royce LiftSystem® for F-35 Lightning II aircraft, the most advanced fighter jets in the world. The LiftSystem provides the vertical-lift capability for the F-35B, which is flown by US Marine Corps and UK pilots.

The new LiftWorks facility represents a total investment of over $10 million from Rolls-Royce and the Marine Corps, and will employ approximately 40 people as workload increases.

F-35 pilots say the LiftSystem has proven to be extremely stable and dependable in flight, with superior aircraft software controls making it easy to operate.

  • Capable of delivering 20,000lbf cold thrust
  • Has a 50 inch diameter 2-stage counter-rotating fan with world leading hollow bladed disk technology
  • Features a thrust vectoring variable area vane box nozzle

The Driveshaft & Clutch delivers:

  • Up to 29,000 shaft horsepower from the main engine to the LiftFan
  • This provides the conversion needed to take fighter jets from conventional flight to STOVL capabilities

Some of the features:

  • Direct 1,950lbf of bypass thrust from main engine
  • Hydraulically actuated nozzles during STOVL operations
  • Provide excellent aircraft roll control and stability
